Changing the File Extensions of all Files in a Directory with DOS

The Rename HelpfileRenames a file or files. RENAME [drive:][path]filename1 filename2. REN [drive:][path]filename1 filename2. Note that you cannot specify a new drive or path for your destination file. Instructions1. If neccesary, isolate the files in a folder of your choosing using Explorer. If you are unfamiliar with the directory structure within Windows, you might want to put the folder in the root directory (C:\). 2. Run a DOS Shell. Start > Run > cmd You should see something similar to: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\> 3. Navigate to the directory you put the files in. DIR lists the current directory. CD changes the directory. CD .. changes to the parent directory, the directory which contains the current directory. COMMAND /? (The slash question mark is called a switch) will display the helpfile for the command. For example, CD /? will display the helpfile for the command CD. 4. Use the wildcard character to specify the file name, specify the current file extension and the extension you would like the files to have. Exampleren *.htm *.shtml Changes all the extensions of the files in the folder from htm to shtml |
