Delete and Retrieve Email Without an Email Client

Uses:
* to retrieve email using someone else's computer
* to delete an email with a large attachment without downloading it

If you are using Windows, you can either use telnet (Start > run > telnet) or HyperTerminal (Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > Hyperterminal).

Set whichever one you prefer to connect to your mail server using port 110.

Once Connected:

The commands:

LIST : returns a LIST of messages
RETR #: RETRieves the whole text of the requested message
DELE #: DELEtes the corresponding message
NOOP : Keeps the connection alive between commands, to prevent the connection from timing out. (NO OPeration)
RSET : ReSET clears all the deleted flags set by DELE
QUIT : Ends the session and saves the changes you've made.
**Changes will not be saved if you do not use the quit command.**

Replace # with the number of the message.

Example:
